THE CONFESSIONS OF A 1970s FOOTBALL FANATIC
by Kim Malpas
Being a match-going female football fan was unusual in the 1970s but for Kim Malpas and her mates, once they'd been bitten by the bug they would stop at nothing to follow their team through all weathers all over the country in an era when watching the game was regarded as a strictly male preserve.
Kim's love affair with Manchester City allowed her to escape the trauma of the separation of her parents and a lifelong battle with the bathroAom scales as she ducked out of school lessons to watch her heroes train. Friends, boyfriends and even husbands have come and gone but City have been a constant in Kim's life since her first game in 1975.
After 50 years together as friends and supporting City, Denise, Janet and Kim still meet up to watch their Beloved Blues whenever they can. They are all
grandparents now but they still love City just as much as they did as teenagers.
